I wonder which 97% He was talking about?

..............April 15, 2011 A day that will live in infamy. The day our commander and hypocrite had his tax return made public. The day that every word, every promise he made to that 97% of America was shown to be a lie. 1.7 million and change, 12,000 and change on his Refund. A millionaire who doesn't pay any rent on his current residence, doesn't have a utility or cable bill, doesn't buy his groceries, does not foot a bill for fuel and transportation. A man who is in fact the most expensive recipient of public assistance and welfare in this country. A man more than happy to push a useless health coverage bill onto Americans because he knows that it will never apply to him. A man who promised Americans he was going to help us, that he would bring change to our lives. Well Mr.Obama has certainly brought us 97% of Americans change. Food prices up from merely unaffordable to outrageous. Fuel prices up from "out of this world" to " I'm going to lose my job because I can no longer afford to drive there AND feed my family." Unemployment at sky high levels that will soon reach the stars when fuel hits $5 a gallon. But I suppose we should admit, the President promised change, he didn't really say a positive change. To those of you who intend to make excuses for Mr.Obama, save them to tell yourselves. There is no excuse, no explanation, that will ever justify his lies, nor his hypocracy. I was always kind of curious about the acronym POTUS. I know now it stands for: " Piece of Temporizing Undeniable @!$%#."

Did you know that at $20 a meal $1.7 mil. will purchase 86,250 meals? $12,000 will buy 600 meals @ $20 a meal. My partner Tami and I live off of $7656.00 a year. We have $400 a month available for food. At $15 a meal we can purchase 26.5 meals a month. Provided, of course, her boys do not come to stay with us. Provided, in fact, that we have absolutely no other expense what so ever in that month. Like for example toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste, you know, the luxuries. In the last 365 days we have been out to dinner 0 times. We have been to the movies 0 times. In fact in the last year we have not been able to go out at all, nor purchase even the smallest gift or card for each other to observe a special occasion. If we owned a vehicle, we could not afford to operate it. Simple as that. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are faced with the same choices Tami and I have to make every month and more. Choices like: Food or medicine? Fuel or medicine or food? Clothes for the kids for school or the light bill or the car insurance or fuel or medicine for the kids or food? Pick one, pick 'em all. That is a large portion of America today. The POTUS, however, can have a chef flown in from the west coast to make him a pizza. Must be nice.

There was a story on the Vine the other day about a republican who held a fund raiser than only garnered him $650.00. This republican spent $55,000 on catering and accommodations for his guests. I could live well on that $55k for Five Years. But a politician who claims to be a representative of the people spent that in one night on a failed PARTY. $1.7 million. I guess that would put one close to being in the top 1% of "taxpayers" eh? Poor people and the working poor do not pay taxes according to that 1%. In receiving a refund our contribution to Uncle Sam is negated. Then LO and Behold the POTUS receives $12,000 and change on HIS REFUND! Using this as a reference point one can only imagine what someone making say $10 mil. gets back on a refund. Or $100 mil. ? Makes a poor man wonder alright. I have always known that relatively speaking, the working poor and lower and middle income earners pay as much or more in taxes as rich folks do. Mr.Obama's tax return while confirming this for me, also comes as no surprise. I have said it before; "I've never met a rich person who did not plead poverty at every opportunity!" The other truth I have always known is that a rich person will knock a poor man aside in their effort to be first in line for ANY government entitlement or handout. Oh they won't soil their own hands by mingling in line with the actual huddled masses. The rich send lawyers and CPA's to get them signed up for welfare, farm subsidies, and anything else they might qualify for. And even more disingenuous, the rich on welfare will never feel the guilt they attempt to instill in the poor and working poor, for taking the same handouts that the poor are. The rich tell themselves that they pay for those programs anyway, so why shouldn't they be allowed to steal from them? Not their fault the hurt/harm it causes. The working poor pay their share as well folks. Five dollars spent has a tremendous impact on the everyday life of a poor person. $55,000 has an impact on a rich person. The only difference is in the amount. The impact is the same. I suppose those numbers might be different if the working man had ever been paid an actual wage. But they are not.

I understand that the prevailing opinion in this country is that the poor and the working poor are dragging our country down. That America would be far better served were the poor and working poor simply turned into grease to slick the wheels of greed commerce and capitalism in America. I would like to remind some that the poor and working poor have won two world wars. That the poor and the working poor built a nation where by individuals whose only skill was accounting could prosper. We have labored in the fields while you have sat astride your mounts and surveyed your kingdoms. We have marched into bloody conflict while you have sat upon your valiant steeds and yelled "Charge" and galloped into the history books. We have fought and bled and died for causes we held no understanding of at your behest. Forget these things at your peril.

Guess you could say I am pissed. I have nothing against a rich person who has earned their wealth. How can I hold a grudge against someone with more ambition than I? But I will not be lied to nor disparaged by a group of people who are no better than I, and who in fact have had very little impact upon my existence though they convince themselves otherwise. You know who you are and who you aren't.

How are you sleeping these days?

We all know the political and corporate fat cats are bleeding Americans dry, they don't give a damn and they never will. Here's an idea that came to me earlier today, I think it would be a good start.

Put an amendment into the constitution for separation of corporations and states. Since the corporations have won personhood they should be taxed accordingly. This will be similar to the separation of church and state without the tax exemption for religious reasons! Corporations are not religions and should be taxed accordingly, and since they like their personhood status, one corporation equals one vote. Fair is fair. No more lobbyists!

Tesla,

Just so we're on the same page, and be honest.

They're income was 1.73 million, almost all of which came from book sales. They had $144,104 taken out in taxes, so they had a refund for overpayment. You know how that works, yes?

Mrs. Obama donated $245,075 to charity, primary recipient was $13,070 to Fisher House which provides humanitarian support to members of the Armed Forces and their families., so maybe you should rage at someone else.

I was incorrect they did have more than $450,000.00 withheld.

he president, who has been campaigning to raise taxes on the wealthy, paid the government $453,770 in federal taxes, about a quarter of the income. Just last week, he renewed his push to end Bush-era tax cuts for households with annual incomes above $250,000 — noting that that would include him.

The White House released tax returns for the Obamas and for Vice President Joe Biden and his wife on Monday, the deadline for Americans to file.

The president for the first time drew his full $400,000 salary in 2010, since in 2009 he didn't start drawing pay until after his inauguration in late January.

Through withholding and estimated tax payments during the year, the Obamas paid $466,104 to the Internal Revenue Service. That was an overpayment, so they are getting a $12,334 refund.

The first family's adjusted gross income for 2010 was $1.728 million. Their taxable income after deductions was $1.34 million.

The income for both years was mostly driven by royalties from books written earlier by Obama. They included his 1995 memoir "Dreams From My Father" and his 2006 political book, "The Audacity of Hope." Those were followed by a children's book last year, "Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters."

Obama is a former law school professor and U.S. senator. His book sales slacked off some from 2009, when they surged after his inauguration. But last year they still netted him nearly $1.4 million.

The president and first lady donated $245,075 — about 14.2 percent of their adjusted gross income — to 36 different charities. The largest was a contribution of $131,075 to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides humanitarian support to members of the United States Armed Forces and their families.

I saw on the evening news that they paid close to 1/2 million in income tax. They said most of the money came from his book sales, and they gave another good chuck to charities. Seems to me the Obamas paid a pretty good share.

#1.9 Did you read my opening George?

Perhaps I have not made myself clear. I am not really concerned about the money as much as the principle. Obama has repeatedly stated that the rich do not pay enough in taxes. Yet here he is getting a refund that is nearly double what I live on in a year, He promised to help folks like me, he has not. And more to the point he has no plans too. Republicans have been claiming since dirt was young that the top 1% pay for all government with their taxes, that the rest of us do not count because...Because we receive refunds, and yet here is the President a top 1%er I presume receiving a refund. From that I can only imagine what other rich folk are doing to take advantage of the system. To make it simple they say one thing and do another, they lie to salve their conscience and then attempt to instill guilt in others for something they are doing as well. To add insult to injury they then want me to vote for and support them. These people the President included have no thought past the election for the American people. If you are not in a certain earnings category already, you may as well not exist. And since it seems to be hot topic I am NPA. This is not about party people, it is about the complete dismisal of an entire segment of the population based solely on their income level.

Since I process taxes during tax season, I'd love to see their return and all supporting documents!

People like the Obama's have damn good tax accountants and will always find a way to avoid taxes!!

Recently it was in the news how the IRS paid out over $400 million in unearned first time home buyer credits and 1/3 were in state prisons and it took years to find it!

So trust me if someone in a state pen can bilk the IRS what makes you think people like the Obama's can't do it too?

Ditto. That's all I've seen is that they pd out $450K in taxes. I've see nothing about a refund & I am sure that would be front-pg news w/ everyone screaming. Link to source for the $12K refund, please?

Minimum wage @ 40 hrs/wk grosses $1144/mo. For a household of one adult, that's hovering around the income eligibility threshold for SNAP benefits, but way below that of HEAP & Section8. So $637/mo for a household of 2 adults is definitely a home run for SNAP. $400/mo isn't a lobster budget, but it seems adequate. I live alone & generally spend about $165/mo on groceries, sometimes less, & it'd be a lot less if I could kick the cold caffeine habit. Of course, I'm not a big carnivore, either, so that's part of it, & when I do get a craving for meatloaf or turkey or steak, it's like a 3-day bender to use up those leftovers. I suppose if ppl have to have their daily meat it'd be more expensive. I find it tougher cooking for one than I did for 2, 3, or 4, as food just comes sized too lg for one person.

you'd be amazed to see the garbage people bring into a tax office to declare as an expense that is deductible.

Only a good tax preparer will refuse it, but when the average tax preparer bills based on amount of work, total income, most will "bend the rules" and if you read the fine print on their agreements, their fees do NOT include going thru an audit!

There was a time in my life that I did tax prep for a living. It was nothing short of sheer amazement at the processes, the angles, the loopholes, and the manipulation...on both sides of the fence.

I don't do that anymore. I know now why the United States is broke. I also know that it's not going to get any better. Generations have been bred into the same games, without the comprehension of what they are doing to themselves, as well as their country, while they play.

Jim, see my post 1.8. The refund was for overpayment of taxes. They donated $245,075 to charity, $13,070 to Fish House for humanitarian support to US Armed Services and their families. His tax returns are open on the internet. There's a lot of Obama haters on this board. Funny I didn't hear anything about the farm subsidies that Bush and Reagan took.

The exemption is such a money-saver that it’s hard to find rich Texans who aren’t moonlighting as farmers on their estates, and that includes President George W. Bush.

Bush has used the farm-tax dodge scheme on at least two properties in the last two decades. When he was governor of Texas, Bush’s lakeside home near Athens, nestled in a secluded pine forest shared with a few other high-powered homeowners, lost its agricultural tax exemption, but was then promptly redesignated as “scenic land” under a similar law and taxed at massively reduced value of $101,770. In 1998, his tax bill was a measly $543.07. (The owner of a $100,000 home in a drab tract development on the very outskirts of Austin would pay somewhere around $3,000.)

Bush was cleared for another http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0404-08.htm">agricultural tax exemption a few years later on his new 1,582-acre ranch in Crawford, Texas, which reduced its taxable value from $2.1 million to $950,000, according to an AP investigation. In 2003, the year American invaded Iraq, the tax break saved Bush $23,679 in property taxes. Bush might have been a disastrous president, but he sure is good at tax-avoidance schemes—which is good for him, considering that Texas has one of the highest property tax rates in the nation.

While there is no definitive national study about the use of agricultural tax breaks, http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0404-08.htm">a patchwork of reports and investigations carried out by local news organizations over the past decade makes it clear that the exemptions are not being used as originally intended. All across the country, agricultural land is being used by wealthy landowners to dodge paying their share of property taxes. And it has been going on for decades.

Here are just a few examples:

§ In the mid-1970s, then-California Governor Ronald Reagan was approved for an agricultural exemption by agreeing to not develop his 688-acre Santa Barbara ranch, which shrunk his tax bill from $12,600 to $1,100. The ranch was classified as farmland, despite the dubious fact that it sat on land “too rugged for serious ranching and almost impossible to farm,” reported UPI in 1974.

Oh, yes Bush's charitable donation wasn't nearly that high and went to CAMP DAVID for remodeling!

Great Article Tesla!

Jim, you beat me too it! The funding of social programs for the illegal population IS a priority for our current POTUS, and a very serious drain on the taxpayers who need that money. Meanwhile the quality of life is slipping away for legal Americans that are barely making it. Even those that have been just above the poverty line, are losing that foothold, due to increasing property taxes to make up for what we paid into Federal taxes and Washington is giving it away to everyone but our own. Increasing gas, food, and utilites are skyrocketing. Funny how there are some that want to compare us to other countrys and say we are far below what those other countrys pay for food and fuel.

Tesla has it right, no one in the positions like Obama or any other politicans, or wealthy CEO's of big Corps can relate to what Americans are facing in this time. Nor do they care.

POTUS is only pushing so damn hard because of Mexico’s President’s visit, being allowed to address Congress which I also feel was wrong esp. due to his derogatory comments about the United States.

I also feel there is a pay back some where along the way to Obama from Mexico, but then isn’t there always a payback somewhere?

Meanwhile all our career politicians have spent years refining the backdoor paybacks and just getting richer off our backs and at our expense.

When people complain to me about Congress or the VA I always ask have you looked at your Senators or your Congressman’s attendance record, or their voting record, or the bills they’ve presented? Most answer no why should I!

Well reason #1 is the mess we’re in, you voted them in or re-elected them and you complain about the economy or no job? Blame yourself long before you blame Congress!

Voters are the first line of defense or failure…. Well we got what you all voted for, change… so sorry it’s not the change you expected so maybe next time you decide you need to vote you will spend 20-60 minutes of your precious time and do your own homework on the politicians before voting!

There should never, never be a foreign leader allowed to stand before our Nations Congress and dictate his own policys and agenda's. That right is for the American People only. The fact Obama has allowed Calderon to do that, along with illegal aliens from Mexico is definatly an alarm.

The fact Obama has allowed Calderon to do that, along with illegal aliens from Mexico is definitely an alarm.

Suspiciously, Obama's loyalties seem to have a common thread. Un-American.

In these twilight hours of his failed presidency, his desperation is starting to pop out in everything he says and does.

You do realize that the President paid federal taxes equivalent to 26% of his income right? Which is a higher effective tax rate than the 400 richest americans according to Forbes magazine by about 10% but why let facts bother you if you can take a swing at the President? You see, just because you get a refund doesn't mean you didn't pay taxes, it just means you paid more than you owed. By the way? I still think the tax rate should be higher for people in his salary range. That or a lot less loopholes and deductions.

While it's all well and good to get upset about a 12k refund put all the facts out, would you?

I don't understand the big deal. Evidently, Obama overpaid by $12,000 and got a refund. He still paid a pile of taxes. I got about $3,000 back because I withheld too much during the year. Does that make me a bad person? More faux outrage over nothing.

The report I based this on was on PBS Monday April 15 I think. Total income was 1.7 and change salary was 450,000 and change refund was 12,000 and change. The reason you probably cannot find it is because the numbers did not poll well. I have already seen the ?title? change twice in 72 hours. I am unable to do links for you so you will have look yourself or you can just tell yourself that I made it up whatever floats your boat. I can tell you that the last I heard the media was now referring to it as the first families income and I am sure that will change again as the poll numbers continue to show American outrage. You cannot claim that the rich do not pay their fair share when you are one of them and then go and get yourself a refund to boot. Obama is a hypocrite and a liar period end of sentence. Frankly I do not care if he donates every damn penny of his refund to charity. Obama says the rich are manipulating the system and here he goes and does it too. And liberals should be ashamed giving him a pass on this. But as always its "different" when done by liberals.

I would like to thank everyone, yes liberals as well, for taking the time to read this. I appreciate all your comments and I read them too.

Well...... I looked it up....

Yesterday it was also revealed that the First Couple paid federal taxes of $453,770 after receiving a $12,334 refund.Reports also indicate that the family has taken a loss of over $4M by accepting the responsibility of the White House. I really do not see that he is manipulating anything at all. He is America's product, after all. Why expect anything less of him than what has been taught here?

Maybe I expect The President of the United States to hold himself to higher standard but that's just stupid huh?. Maybe because a good leader leads by example. I read your comment and frankly I find your attitude appalling. So as he spends this nation into oblivion we should just toss it off as not his fault just the way he was schooled? Your attitude also indicates the maybe we should pull our next President from a pool of the homeless or maybe some junkies, crackhead would make a fine president right?

......

You and I seem to hold a grave difference of opinion here. I don't find any fault at all with the man's personal money management, and I don't see anything wrong with paying more than $450,000 in taxes. I'm honored to think that he would waste his time on such a thankless job, working double-overtime, tolerating the press as well as the hostilities of the public, for far less money than he has seen in previous years. I, personally, am very pleased and impressed with America's current president.

With that said, I was just as supportive of the last president. I don't spin out cyclical mudslinging drivel of idiots v pinheads as often as the winds change. I am an American, plain and simple. I have also been homeless before, and, frankly, I have a few ideas of my own as to the quality of the United States of America's governmental operations. Would I want to be president someday? Nope. I wouldn't put up with the pile of @!$%# to save my pretty little neck.

Now. If you are disappointed in your leader, then the best thing that you can do is become a leader yourself, and not waste your time criticizing that of others. The president of this country is not nearly the only leader our society needs, and if you are more satisfied attacking his character than building your own, just what do you think that says about your leadership qualities?

Yes, I'm sure you do find my attitude appalling. That's fine with me. I have watched my country be driven into oblivion for 3/4 of my life, and it wasn't the democrats or republicans who did that all by themselves. The problems this country faces are directly inherited attitudes from a very long history of incredibly poor judgement calls on both sides of the fence. Democrats are not America's problem. Republicans are not America's problem. Americans are America's problem. Democrats and Republicans are just a by-product of an insatiable, primal urge to throw temper tantrums until somebody quits and somebody "wins". Unfortunately, nobody wins under those circumstances.

You might very well spend the rest of your days cursing Barack Obama for that, but when he is long gone, this country will still be spinning its' wheels with the very same shortcomings, and they won't have him to blame for it then. I'm sure, though, that they will elect someone else to pin their failures on.

If you do not like the president you should try and be president? You're kidding right? It costs an average of $5 mil. just to run for a seat on a city commission. $5 mil.

The current shape of our country is a direct result of the apathetic and lackadaisical attitude you show here.

I have not "loved" a single president in my lifetime all 44 years of it.

I am however doing something. I am here near daily. I write my articles I make comments. I share my observations from my 44 years.

I was first homeless at age 13 I have since spent a grand total of 18 years on the streets

I have attacked his actions my observations on Obama's character are a direct result of his actions. Consequences is what that is commonly called.

You claim Americans are America's problem and you are correct. Your attitude displayed here makes you part of that problem. Might I suggest a little more action from yourself before condeming the attempts of others.

You should not put words into my mouth. I said -leader-, not president.

The current shape of our country is a direct result of the apathetic and lackadaisical attitude you show here.

Well, congratulations. I, too, am a product of America, and I will be everything I have ever dreamed of being, and do every single thing that I believe that I can do. It truly does not matter whether you like that or not. I've learned from the best about foregoing consideration for others. :)

Your attitude displayed here makes you part of that problem.

Only for you, and on this thread. I am actually one of the few success stories I know of here on Newsvine, for those who have paid attention. Your meltdown has been quite the little victory for me in my life. I'm doing better than I have ever been. I'll actually earn enough to merit paying taxes this year, for the first time in my life. If all that is a bad thing for you, then that, too, is just too bad.

"It takes no courage to tell someone they are wrong. It takes courage to claim you are right before the world and defend it."

I am definitely right. That is not something that I am going to bother defending. I will, instead, live it, and be it, and I am going to love every little minute of that. Your own attitude is one that I find offensive, over-bearing, controlling, presumptuous, and a bit vindictive. If I may say so myself, lackadaisical is much more attractive.

Might I suggest a little more action from yourself before condeming the attempts of others.

I'm so far ahead of this game I'll be surprised if the rest of the country does catch up.

I am happy you are so far ahead of the rest of us. I hope it does not get lonely there. I am glad that your attitude is the only one you find correct and inoffensive it says a lot about you.

I have earned enough in 35 years of working to have a tidy litlle 100,000 tucked into SS. My meltdown as you call it is action against what I see as injustice. As for your success I am glad but I have really not seen it here on Newsvine must be a well kept secret. As for my life I am happy and my circumstance will eventually improve. Thanks for your concern.

Must be nice to be an island of selfdom. You are a product of your own desire. You cannot hold responsible the world around you for the shape of the one inside you.

However I wish you the best. And thanks again for reading.

Don't go after the rich who actually pay their taxes. Go after the ones who have cheated the government out of $340 billion dollars. Not exactly chump change. Go after the businesses who not only make money and don't pay taxes, but get government money to outsource their jobs to Asia. You're on the wrong highway.

When I was a kid there was a bully in school who tried to tell everyone what THEY should do, how THEY should live, and what they should do with THEIR lunch money...enemies as well as friends and family. One day after many years of forcing his will on Everyone, grew tired of the bullies self-righteousness and his do-as-I-say & not-as-I do attitude. Might makes right he said to himself, I control everyone and I take anything I want to from anybody. BUT in time, , , after being caught in numerous LIES and deception, the friends, enemies, and family alike teamed together and beat the bully to death with his own rules...the whole class cheered !!! ...(especially the disenfranchised & poor in America)...Make PEACE not WAR!!!

I have said it once, and I will say it again: Obama is the Antichrist. LOL. I just love the people who say "he was handed a failing economy, and he has worked to get us out of it".

YEAH RIGHT!! He may have been handed a faultering economy, BUT: he sure didn't do us any good bailing big banks out over AMERICAN CITIZENS! Not to mention the fact that every year Bush was in office, social security had a small raise EVERY YEAR, due to the rising cost of LIVING. Something Americans have been having a hard time with, anyway. Since NOBAMA took office, there has not been a single rise, and he has been in office how long? I'm not one to bitch about free services, but he is taking away from the very people who made this country able to allow him into office. I have a grandmother who had to eat "Cracker Soup" for 2 weeks of the month (Until I found out about it), and now me, raising 4 kids, started helping her pay bills, with my limited income. Due to the fact that she makes "over poverty level" on social security, she cannot get any sort of help with ANYTHING, including food stamps. Its not like she can work, they take more money out of her social security, and she is almost 90.

Yeah, he is the antichrist. Him and "The Don-F!@#".

Tesla013, you put a different light on what I really knew but just didn't put it together the way you did. But every POTUS in my lifetime has lived the same life that you describe. It is what really makes them out of touch with the majority. Same with all politicians, as most are wealthy. But most of them are not as wealthy as the wealthiest in this country that don't pay what they could and should be paying. I have no clue who made all the tax laws but they did a piss poor job. I don't understand why GE Corp didn pay corporate taxes and again those tax laws suck big time. I can tell you this though, I'm outraged with what goes on in this country. And yes who in the heck gave all those perks to all of our Presidents? They surely should be paying rent and living expenses. And because of these facts there is little wonder why the majority want to cheat the government anyway they can. It also allows all of us to want our own entitlements. If all these politicians get what they get then surely I can have my measley $800 a month in social security retirement when I'm just not able to work. I'm just about ashamed that we are where we are with our own citizens, while our government gives billions to other countries, let alone what corporations/politicians and the wealthiest get away with.

    I have enjoyed your articles.
